MIA-Macedonian Interethnic Association for health promotion and health education is a non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit organization existing since 1996. Ever since, MIA has remained the oldest organization, working on prevention of HIV/AIDS and sexual transmitted infections in Macedonia.

 

 

Organizational structure:                                                                                               

 

 

Since 2000, within MIA a subdivision Youth of MIA started to work. Today, it represents the very active part of the organization gathering young people, mainly high school and university students. The activity of the Youth of MIA is totally independent from the rest of the organization in terms of creation, realization and evaluation.

 

 

Staff/volunteers

 

MIA volunteers, from all national groups, work either for full or for part time. Along with the growth of HIV/AIDS/STIs problem in the country MIA membership is growing. The majority of members consist of medical and social workers, psychologist, students from university or secondary school as well as many others who wish to contribute to the organization and its mission.

 

 

Mission:                                                                                                                              

 

Raising awareness for HIV/AIDS/STIs prevention which concern the squired knowledge, maintaining the positive behavior and developing the ability for personal protection and practicing of safe behavior with which the HIV/AIDS/STIs risk will be reduced/eliminate.

 

 

General Objectives:                                                                                                         

 

·         Promoting programs of information, education, communication and campaign awareness among young people for prevention HIV/AIDS/STI's as well as programs for counseling and support of PLWAH and their families;

·         Builds personal skills for preventing HIV/AIDS/STIs through lifestyle change, social support networks, improved mental health and the ability to access social supports;

·         Raising public awareness particularly on HIV/AIDS/STIs and human rights trough improving the collaboration between the NGOs and media representatives as well raising their experience in professional work related to HIV/STIs issue ;

 

 

Target groups

 

·         Adolescents (school and out of school);

·         Young girls and Women;

·         Roma;

·         People with different sexual orientations;

·         Commercial sex workers

·         People living with HIV/AIDS and their families

 

 

The main activities:

 

  • AIDS Info Line Service;

  • HIV/AIDS/STI Peer information, education and communication;

  • Promoting intergenerational open conversation in the family about HIV/AIDS/STIs;

  • HIV/AIDS/STI Library Service;

  • HIV/AIDS Media campaigns;

  • Psychosocial support and palliative care for PLWHA and their families;

  • HIV/AIDS/SPIs awareness and prevention;

  • Developing of HIV/AIDS/STI Promoting Materials;

  • International relations.

Some Projects Activities (1996/2002):                                                             

 

·         “HIV/AIDS education in secondary schools” - 1996/1997 - supported by DUREX.

·         “Through Radio for Health education” - 1997/1998 every week one hour education program on two radio stations on Macedonian and Albanian language - supported by Students Radio Station and private radio station “Kiss” from Tetovo.

·         “Strengthening Student's HIV/AIDS knowledge” - 1998 - 5 months project with workshops and round tables discussions for young people focused on HIV/AIDS - supported by DUREX.

·         "Summer, radio waves for education" - July/August 1998 two times a week one hour education program for health and HIV/AIDS/STD prevention in Ohrid and Struga - supported by private radio station “HIT” from Struga.

·         “AIDS Campaign for R.Macedonia” - 1998 - two months campaign in coalition with national NGOs and governmental organizations - supported by World Bank.

·         “Women rights for protection against HIV/STDs” - 1998/1999 - eight months project supported by Institute for Sustainable Communities and USAID.

·         “HIV/AIDS situation analysis and need assessments in R.Macedonia” - 1999 - project supported by UNDP.

·         “Humanitarian Activities, need assessment and recommendations regarded to the refugee situation in R.Macedonia” - 1999 - project supported by UNDP.

·         "Women's action in HIV/AIDS prevention" - 1999/2000 - project supported by American Refugee Committee/ARC.

·         “HIV/AIDS Human Rights in R.Macedonia” - 1999/2000 - project supported by Royal Norwegian Embassy and UNDP.

·         "Home for discussion, support and understanding" - 2000 - project supported by Open Society Institute.

·         "Women's action for health promotion within underprivileged communities" - 2000/2001 international project with HESEF-Bulgaria, supported by Fare Lien Programme, European Commission

·         "HIV/AIDS - our join challenge for prevention and human rights" -  2001/2002 - project supported by Royal Norwegian Embassy.

·         "Rapid Assessment and Response of sexual risk behavior and Psycho Active substance use (PAS) among children aged 10-24" - 2001/2002, supported by UNICEF

·         "Every adolescent has a right to know" - 2001/2003, supported by UNICEF

·         "Linked generations by AIDS education" - 2002/2003 - project supported by Norwegian Government.

·         "Information and communication" - 2002/2003 - project supported by Open Society Institute.

·         "Youth in Stop AIDS Action" -  2004 -  project supported by BCYF.

·         "Girls, boys and condoms" -  2004 - project supported by Youth - net
